Flights to Italy

When we go to Italy, we almost always use United/Lufthansa flights via Frankfurt or Munich to Bologna, and then drive to Sestino from Bologna.  Munich is our preferred connecting airport – it is an easy airport to navigate, and the food and shopping are good, too.

Flights on major airlines are relatively cheap to a number of large and mid-size airports including Bologna, Florence and Rome.

However, the evolution of discount airlines in Europe has really increased your options.  You can now get really cheap flights on and from alternative airports in London, Frankfurt and other European hubs into smaller airports not far from Sestino, as listed in the table below.

One way to get a broad picture of the cheap flights from UK to Italy is to search on the following link to Skycanner.

Closest Airports to Sestino

Milano LIN 234 4 hrs Multiple carriers, Direct flights from USA Here

Unfortunately, many of these discount flights will require transferring airports in London or Frankfurt, unless you can get a transatlantic flight into an airport like Stanstead, near London.  Nevertheless, these can be good, affordable options if you would like to spend the night or a couple of days in London, Paris or Frankfurt.  But for a shorter trip (two weeks or less), we recommend paying a bit more for a faster connection through a single major airport in Europe.

Driving Directions to Sestino

The following are driving directions to the town of Sestino. These directions are not the only route – there are dozens of ways to arrive there, and exploring back roads as you go can be lots of fun. Check out our maps here.

We will provide our guests with detailed driving instructions to the Mulino, and arrange for a caretaker to meet you on the main road and take you to the Mulino.

Because the driveway is so rocky, it is only passable by four-wheel drive vehicles. For this reason, we make available to our guests the use of our Opel Frontera.

Rental cars

If you are staying for two weeks or less, renting a car at the airport is the easiest way to get to Sestino. On a short trip it isn't worth spending most of one day to get there and most of one day to get back by public transport, and hiring a local to pick you up at an airport (which we can arrange) may cost about as much as the cost of a rental car. Rental cars can be reserved on Expedia and other travel Web sites.
